The Wisconsin Population Health Service Fellowship Program is a two year service and training program designed for early career public health professionals. Fellows are placed in community, non-profit, governmental, or health-service organizations across Wisconsin tackling some of the most pressing public health challenges. Through a curriculum focused on health equity, systems thinking, and collaborative leadership, the program helps train the next generation of public health leaders.
The WI Population Health Service Fellowship Program is housed within University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, however fellows are placed at public health agencies across the state, where they build capacity and advance public health practice. Fellows have been placed at more than 50 different public health agencies across the state – including local and tribal health departments, state governmental public health, as well as non-profits and community based organizations. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Wood County Health Department, Eau Claire City-County Health Department, City of Milwaukee Health Department, Public Health Madison & Dane County Health Department are ‘core placement sites’ that have hosted fellows consistently over the years. As public health grows and evolves in Wisconsin, we are always adding new placement sites advancing essential public health efforts across the state. Each fellow has a preceptor (or preceptors) who serve as supervisors and mentors at their placement site, guiding both the day-to-day work as well as providing guidance and mentorship throughout their fellowship.
The Fellowship Program was established in 2004, and has been funded by the Wisconsin Partnership Program since its inception, providing resources and support to advance public health efforts throughout Wisconsin. Since 2004, the Fellowship has recruited and placed 116 early-career post-graduate professionals to work for public health and community-based organizations across our state. The Program plays a pivotal role in developing a skilled, equity focused public health workforce dedicated to improving health outcomes throughout the state. With many fellow alumni remaining in Wisconsin’s public health workforce, we are proud of our robust, engaged, and supportive network of alumni who continue to support future cohorts of fellows.
