Population Health Performance Index

How Good is Your State’s Population Health Performance?

Population health has two important components:

  1. the health outcomes (how long and how well people live) of a group of individuals (in this case, the population of each state) and
  2. the distribution of health outcomes across that group, i.e., is everyone equally healthy or are there disparities in health?

As you dive into the data on this site, you will see that although some states have relatively good health outcomes overall, these favorable outcomes are not experienced equally by everyone in these states, i.e., there are significant disparities in health.

The Population Health Performance Index (PHPI) provides a way to simultaneously examine how well your state is doing in terms of a) overall health outcomes and b) disparities in outcomes.
