UW Population Health Institute Awarded the 2022 Wisconsin “Organization Advancing Health Equity”

UW Population Health Institute participated in the Wisconsin Public Health Association conference where they were given the distinguished honor of receiving the inaugural award that recognizes a Wisconsin organization for Advancing Health Equity. The 2022 annual conference took place May 23-26 in the Wisconsin Dells.

Under the leadership of Dr. Sheri Johnson, UWPHI Director, the Institute was recognized for advancing health equity at local, state and national levels, and for excellence in coalition building, communications, programs and research. Advancing health equity is at the heart of the Institute’s work to translate research for policy and practice. Conference presentations featured the work PHI team members do in collaboration with partners around the state, ranging from addressing racism as a public health crisis to integrating equity in public health practice.

“Whether you look at UW PHI’s early work (such as advancing the County Health Ranking model emphasizing social determinants of health, training and technical assistance for coalition building through Healthy Wisconsin Leadership Institute, or multi‐method community partnered evaluation projects) or their more recent initiatives (such as narrative infrastructure and capacity building, COVID 19 Just Recovery efforts, or Community Health Worker training and technical assistance), UW PHI is truly the premier organization advancing health equity in Wisconsin and beyond,” public health leaders Justin Rivas MPH, MIPA, Community Health Initiatives Director of the Milwaukee Healthcare Partnership, and Geoffrey Swain Emeritus Professor, UW Department of Family Medicine and Community Health and former Medical Director for the City of Milwaukee Health Department said in a letter they co-wrote to nominate the Institute for the prize.

Upon receiving the award on behalf of the Institute, Sara Lindberg, the Director of PHI’s Evaluation Research group shared; “This is our first mile in an ultramarathon. We are committed to the journey.”
