Wisconsin Population Health Service Fellowship
Wisconsin Population Health Service Fellowship
The Wisconsin Population Health Service Fellowship Program is a two-year service and training program designed for early-career public health professionals. Fellows are placed in community, nonprofit, governmental, or health-service organizations across Wisconsin tackling some of the most pressing public health challenges. Through a curriculum focused on systems thinking, collaborative leadership, and strengthening public health practice, the program helps prepare the next generation of public health leaders.
The Wisconsin Population Health Service Fellowship Program is housed within the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health; however fellows are placed at public health agencies and organizations across the state, where they build capacity and advance public health practice. Fellows have been placed at more than 50 different public health agencies across the state – including local and tribal health departments, state governmental public health, as well as nonprofits and community based organizations. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Wood County Health Department, Eau Claire City-County Health Department, City of Milwaukee Health Department, Public Health Madison & Dane County Health Department are core placement sites that have consistently hosted fellows over the years. In addition, the program continues to add new placement sites advancing public health efforts across the state. Each fellow has a preceptor, or preceptors, who serve as supervisors and mentors at their placement site, providing guidance on both their day-to-day work and their development throughout the fellowship.
The Fellowship Program was established in 2004, and has been funded by the Wisconsin Partnership Program since its inception, providing resources and support to advance public health efforts throughout Wisconsin. Since 2004, the Fellowship has recruited and placed 123 early-career post-graduate professionals to work for public health and community-based organizations across our state. The program plays a pivotal role in developing a skilled public health workforce prepared to address complex public health challenges and improve health outcomes throughout the state. With many fellow alumni remaining in Wisconsin’s public health workforce, we are proud of our robust, engaged, and supportive network of alumni who continue to support future cohorts of fellows.
