UWPHI Immersions: Co-creating a strengthened public health workforce through belonging and narrative - February 27, 2024 from 9:30am-12pm CT.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Division of Public Health (DPH) is a recipient of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Public Health Infrastructure Grant (PHIG) (2023-2027), which aims to support Wisconsin’s continuing efforts to build towards a vision of stronger, thriving communities that are better able to withstand tomorrow’s pandemics or public health challenges including chronic disease and to support “everyone living their best life.”

As a part of PHIG, the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (UWPHI) will host and share a variety of learning opportunities for Wisconsinites working in public health or allied fields to build skills needed to thrive across all levels of the public health system. UWPHI will begin offering immersion learning opportunities every other month in 2024. Immersions are 2.5-hour virtual sessions dedicated to (1) learning about the eight foundational capabilities, (2) skill building on transformative narrative and communication, and (3) networking with public health colleagues across the state. Immersions will address learning needs gathered from workforce surveys and assessments. Lessons learned from immersions during the COVID-19 response and recovery will inform continuous improvement efforts.

All governmental public health staff are invited and encouraged to attend. We also welcome community partners to participate and contribute. Public health system transformation requires deep engagement and mutual respect among all those working in public health.

Our topic will be: UWPHI Immersions: Co-creating a Strengthened Public Health Workforce through Belonging and Narrative.

This immersion will:

  • Introduce the Public Health Infrastructure Grant and the roles of three partners: Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), Wisconsin Association for Local Health Departments and Boards (WALHDAB), University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (UWPHI).
  • Deepen understanding about the relationship between health equity, inclusion and belonging, and generate ideas for fostering belonging in your work.
  • Define narrative and give attendees the skills to differentiate narratives from messages and worldviews as well as demystify narrative. We’ll use a group exercise to illustrate that attendees are already skilled narrative experts themselves.
