Jamal is a Community Coach for the Mobilizing Action Toward Community Health (MATCH) Group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Population Health Institute. Jamal has called WI home for most of his life and has deep roots in Milwaukee, WI, and its diverse communities. As someone who has multiple intersecting identities, Jamal has a passion for serving marginalized communities and being an advocate for change. Jamal has been doing community and equity work in Milwaukee since graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2017, when shortly after he began serving with City Year Milwaukee in Milwaukee Public Schools as a near peer mentor for students. His work and passion for serving Black and Brown LGBTQIA communities in Milwaukee led him to his work in HIV prevention, community building, and mobilizing. Through his work and partnerships, Jamal has help to create safe/brave spaces for Black and brown (Same Gender-Loving) SGL, individuals In Southeastern WI. Jamal continues to advocate for LGBTQIA communities of color, and work towards equity in HIV prevention and care services in WI as a member of the Statewide Action Planning Group. In addition,Jamal is currently earning his Master’s in Public Health and outside of MATCH is involved in a variety of freelance journalism projects.
