Service and training are at the core of the Fellowship Program. Through public service on-the-job training Fellows will have opportunities to strengthen and apply knowledge, contribute to a range of communities, sharpen skills and develop strong networks with a range of public health professionals.
The training component of the program is organized around a set of competencies and includes participation in monthly meetings, attendance at state and national conferences and in some cases continued coursework.
Further, Fellows complete a set of performance requirements over their two-year placement. These requirements represent some of the skill sets necessary for successful public health research and program endeavors. Training is guided by the assistance of an on-site preceptor who can provide oversight of career growth and technical assistance.
Examples of current projects undertaken by Fellows include:
- Organize coalition to improve nutrition and level of physical activity.
- Assist local governments in assessing health care through development of user-friendly data.
- Create an improvement plan for STD counseling programs.
- Assess efficacy of post-diagnosis cancer counseling program.
- Analyze use of vaccination among newborns in Milwaukee.
- Work with South Milwaukee community on a diabetes education project.
- Develop recommendations for reform of state financing of local public health programs.
