Core Activities of Learning
Fellows document competency in the basic elements of public health practice through the Core Activities of
Learning (CALS). The CALS focus on competency in the areas of scientific inquiry, health policy, community
health, communication and program administration. Fellows share their CALS experiences with each other over
the two year Fellowship term.
Specific Core Activities of Learning include:
Amanda Schultz, second year Fellow, is training at the Walker Point Community Health Center and the Milwaukee Health Department

Conduct and write up a data analysis addressing a public health issue.

Develop a work plan for a program or project.

Prepare a written evaluation of a program or project.

Make an oral presentation to a professional group.

Make an oral presentation to a community group.

Prepare and present a poster at a professional conference.

Submit a paper to a peer-reviewed journal.

Complete a public health project in a community outside of the primary placement setting.

Prepare a grant application.

Write a project/program budget.

Plan and facilitate one Fellowship monthly meeting annually.
Fellows create a portfolio with documentation of their CALS along with an assessment of their performance.
